3 Steps to Help You Find The Perfect Candidate Hiring the perfect candidate is a tricky process, one that takes a lot of patience and understanding. Skilled candidates seem to be an increasingly rare find, in fact, according to the  Gartner CIO Agenda Report: “66 percent of CIOs believe there is a talent crisis in the world”. GetApp’s survey of 400 recruiters and 300 consumers supports that claim. 40% of recruiters say they are most worried about there being a lack of skilled candidates out there for them to find. The survey was done to determine the best strategies for hiring high-quality applicants in the most efficient way. Our advice would be to take recruitment seriously and don’t look at it as a chore. VP of marketing at recruitment software Greenhouse Maia Josebachvili said that if a company is to be successful, they should treat the recruitment process as a strategic driver of business. Before embarking on your recruitment process, make sure you consider these three things: 1. Match company culture to candidate 75% of candidates applying for a job say that company culture has a strong influence on which company they choose to work for. You need to work out who it is you’re trying to attract to the role; who is your ideal candidate? Cater this brand and culture promotion to the ideal applicant to ensure you beat competitors to the dwindling stream of talent. Only 8% of employers use social media when recruiting, whereas social media is the 2nd biggest channel people use to look for jobs. Due to the rise of LinkedIn, it’s important not to underestimate the value of social media. Use this channel to promote your brand and company culture in front of your target audience. With so few recruiters using this channel, it could give your company an advantage. 2. Stand out from the crowd Job boards dominate the way candidates are looking for jobs. 55% of people said that job boards are the main channel they use to find work.   Not only this but if you’re looking on a job board, chances are you don’t have a specific company in mind. You can scroll through 100s of job descriptions, so it’s important that yours catches the eye. Again, a good way to do this is to promote your brand and culture. Be clear and outline the job in detail, but without using company terminology that candidates may not understand. These will ensure your job description is of high quality, but to really stand out you should promote company perks and benefits. Maybe you have a free gym membership? Free fruit? Nobody stays past 5:30? All these will catch the eye of a potential candidate more than longwinded additional descriptions into the role. Compensation remains the number one factor pulling people into jobs, so good pay, company benefits, and rewards will help you pull in that number one recruit. 3. Go big with referrals Candidates that have been referred for a role by someone from within the company have the best track record for success. Of all types of application, those that came from referrals were said to be the highest quality, with 26% of Employers saying referred candidates were the strongest. Not only are they the best, but they also have the fastest hiring process. 25% of recruiters said that candidates referred to them were quickest to hire, the highest of any other type of application. Make sure you chase up any referrals you might get for certain positions. It could also be worth encouraging in-house referrals. Offer a reward for anyone within the company that refers a successful candidate. This will benefit you but also boost morale in the work environment. Thats not what we are talking about here in the use of good, effective touch. Physical touch is a communication tool few people take advantage of. It can help you bond with people, not just communicate. Yes, you can touch strangers at a networking event if you do it with the right attitude and technique. Here are some tips on effective use of touch in a business context. Reach out an touch the person youre talking to. Maintain physical contact for a split second as you speak directly to the person. Place your hand a remove it in an equally purposeful and definite manner on an acceptable part of the body: shoulder, elbow, forearm, hand. Relax, smile, and look as if you expect the other person to accept the touch in the manner you gave it (supportive, encouraging, caring, respectful). Do not use touch with any intimate overtones. Be sensitive to the person’s reactions. Above all, be consistent. Use touch with men and women, young and old, the likeable and the not-so-likeable. Even if you’re skeptical about this, try it to test the effect. You may be amazed. Four Ways Men and Women Sleep Differently Breaking News: This just in, folks: men and women are different. Yes, we’re having a hard time believing it ourselves. But seriously: there are actual, honest-to-goodness differences between them. What kind of differences? Wellwe don’t want to get too technical, but there’s a wide variety of departments that men and women differ in. The category that we’re most concerned with right now is in the department of sleep. Did you know that men and women do it differently? Er, rest differently, we mean? According to some authorities on the matter, they most certainly do. We were intrigued by the concept that these gender variations of humanoids which you call “men” and “women” could do something fundamental to their species so differently, although they appear to do the same when you look at them doing it. (Again, we’re talking about sleep here.) That’s why we decided to come up with a list of four ways that men and women supposedly sleep differently and also, because we thought maybe you might like to know. Women go to sleep earlier, men don’t. It appears as though these creatures you call “men” aren’t liable to pass out until two hours after a woman does. Butuh, why again? According to a study conducted in 2011, It appears as though womens circadian clocks are wound up to slow down sooner in the day than mens. This makes them tend to fall asleep at a decent hour in the evening and wake up bright and early the next morning. In fact, researchers found out that females were more likely to be up and at ‘em ahead of schedule than their male counterparts. Believe it or not, women’s circadian cycles were technically shorter by about six minutes. Isn’t that nuts? (No pun intended.) Men and women dream about different things. This may come as a shock to you, but when it comes to the themes and content in dreams themselves, men and women differ considerably. For instance, women are reported to have more nightmares than their counterparts. Psychologists have theorized that nightmares are sometimes used as a subconscious strategy to help them deal with the fears and anxieties that they carry around in our waking lives (but we think that’s true for men, too). On average, women are said to have twice the amount of bad dreams that men do. Men, on the other hand, dream about sex with unknown partners, physical aggression, violence, cars, roads, and physical aggression in dreams that tend to be shorter in the length. Ahh, sounds relaxing, does it not? (And, uh, who is said to have more nightmares again?) Women, meanwhile, dream about family members, emotional expression, flirting with someone, talking it out, having sex with someone they know, and trigger warning the loss of loved ones. However, ladies do have longer, more colorful dreams overall. So that’s something. Women have colder feet in bed somehow? And sometimes out of bed, too. Why is it that women’s feet are so chilly? What’s the rub? It makes cuddling and/or snuggling more complicated than it has to be. Some experts have stated that it’s because of women’s evenly distributed fat layers. Before you get mad, let us clarify. Women’s even distributed fat layers provide a much needed internal insulation that keeps them warm for the most part. But this means that females have more warmth that protects their core and trunk, which means less blood flows to their feet and hands. In comparison, men have more muscle mass that generates heat and is sufficiently supplied by blood vessels that keeps their feetsies nice and toasty. But that’s just one theory, of course. Women are more prone to insomnia than men. Sigh. Okay, fine. This is true as well. Again: why? Women have different levels of hormones that interfere with their body chemistry than men do. Unexplained shifts in estrogen and progesterone at night can interrupt sleep on occasion. Also, women have these things called menstrual cycles that their men didn’t seem to pick up when their archetypes were being manufactured in the platonic realm of ideals. You may have heard of them before. They tend to disrupt female sleep cycles too, as they create further hormonal dramas within their physical constitution. Oh, and there’s this other thing that happens to women called “pregnancy”. It can interfere with their circadian groove just as much, if not more. This concludes our studies on the sleeping patterns of the humanoid lifeforms known as “men” and “women”. We hope that one day, in the distant future, your species’ evolution will eventually heal the schism that exists between your physical presences if your planet allows it. There are consequences to what you post on social media sites. Whether it is tarnishing your credibility, losing a job, or rescinded admissions into college. I hope that this post heightens your awareness of the severe repercussions and helps you educate your family and friends. Post Memes Online At Your Own Risk Read this headline from The Harvard Crimson: Harvard Rescinds Acceptances for At Least Ten Students for Obscene Memes No matter where you stand on free speech, you cant overlook the impact exercising this right can have on your current reputation or future opportunities. Another way of saying this is, right or wrong, people base decisions on what you post online. What Happened In case you missed this news, heres what happened. Students admitted into Harvard didnt post memes on Harvards Facebook group. They werent that clueless about the dangers of their  actions. But that didnt matter. Heres the timeline and what got them in trouble. Admitted students were invited to join the official Admissions Facebook page. A page run and monitored by Harvard. Early December 2016: From this official group, a new group of about 100 students was independently formed. This group was designed for students to share memes about popular culture. Late December 2016: And then, another private group was formed called (at one time) Harvard memes for horny bourgeois teens, In order to join this private group, admitted students had to earn membership by sharing a meme in the aforementioned private group. April: Harvard Admissions got wind of this group and emailed members to submit an explanation of their actions for discussion with the Admissions Committee. End of April: Letters sent to 10 students rescinding offers of admission. Warning Harvard covered their bases and warned students in their Facebook group. As reported in The Harvard Crimson, there were warnings and disclaimers. The Harvard 2021 Facebook group warned: “As a reminder, Harvard College reserves the right to withdraw an offer of admission under various conditions including if an admitted student engages in behavior that brings into question his or her honesty, maturity, or moral character,” the description reads. So what exactly does behavior that brings into question honesty, maturity and moral character  mean? Some say it isnt clear. Apparently, the memes which resulted in 10 students losing a place at Harvard included jokes about  the Holocaust, pedophilia, suicide, racism, school shootings, and bestiality. What is the moral character of someone that would post jokes on these topics? Would you want to work with someone who shared those types of jokes privately? Do you think it seeps into how they interact in the workplace or how they conduct themselves?  Apparently, Harvard believed moral character and maturity of these students was questionable. As a private institution, Harvard doesnt need to comply with First Amendment laws. But are those jokes protected by the First Amendment? Should they be? Or is this issue a matter of judgment? PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY You can say these students shouldnt be punished for the actions they took in private. But, their actions werent done in private. They were taken on a private Facebook group. Nothing published online is ever truly private. Here are some reminders: Everyone is entitled to their opinions. However, you will be judged based on what you say and how you say it. Any comment you post to a public group on Facebook is visible to anyone. Granted, they may have to search for it, but they can your comments by searching within a group. There are also closed groups and secret (private) groups. To join a closed group, the administrator has to accept your request to join. A secret group also requires administrator acceptance. Posts made in closed groups are only visible to current members of the group. So its important to know who else is in the groups you join (your boss, colleagues, future employers, etc.) Colleges and companies are using social media to evaluate candidates. This will likely continue. So avoid controversial topics, including politics and religion. In one CareerBuilder study, 33% of employers who research candidates on social networking sites say they’ve  found content that made them more likely to hire a candidate. What’s more, nearly a quarter (23%) found content that directly led to them hiring the candidate.
